Clean and Inspect Your BoatA good start to your boat storage preparations, is to thoroughly clean and inspect your vessel inside and out. A mild soap and water solution or store bought boat cleaner works well to remove any dirt or residue left from your last outings. Inspect carefully your boat’s interior and exterior for any signs of wear and tear, such as, signs of corrosion, dents, or cracks and repair as needed. Seal any exhaust ports or other areas to prevent any pests from entering your boat.

Drain Your BoatPull your drain plug to drain your boat of all liquids will prevent and cracking or freezing done while storing in the colder months. Empty the bilge, any water tanks, head, pipes, and seacocks, raising the bow (if possible) will help to accelerate drainage. Adding antifreeze to the bilge and water tanks will prevent freezing.

Prepare the Fuel TankAir that is left in your fuel tank expands and contracts during the winter months that can lead to in moisture getting inside the tank. Fuel that contains ethanol can absorb the moisture and break down over time and leave you with a separated sludgy mess. Adding a fuel stabilizer prevents oxidation and build up caused by moisture so your boat is ready to start with no issues when its time to hit the water on your next boat adventure!

Cover and Secure Your BoatInvesting in a good boat cover is the best way to protect your vessel from the elements. A cover designed to resist water, weather and UV damage will go a long way to prevent the wear and tear that mother nature causes during extended storage during the off seasons. Also, properly securing your boat using storage moorings or regular tie-downs will prevent your boat from moving around during transporting or storage.
